South East Queensland is booming with new data from the 2024 SEQ regional economic dataset, developed by the National Institute of Economic and Industry Research (NIEIR), revealing strong population, job and economic growth.

Cementing itself as one of Australia’s fastest growing regions, the latest data shows SEQ’s Gross Regional Product tipped $334.05 billion, up 2.1% in the past year. Over this period SEQ welcomed 101,000 new residents and created over 68,000 new jobs and 384,321 small businesses.

Council of Mayors (SEQ) today met with Queensland Premier David Crisafulli and key Government Ministers at Queensland Parliament calling on strong partnerships to empower, enable and back councils grappling with challenges of rapid population growth and cost of living pressures.

In its first official delegation with the new Crisafulli Government, the Council of Mayors (SEQ) discussed the need for strong partnerships backed by funding.

High on the agenda was cost of living with natural disasters, the region’s demand for infrastructure and public transport, and impact of the waste levy placing councils under more financial stress than ever before.

The delegation highlighted strong collaboration with the State Government as critical to delivering the better roads, public transport and other upgrades needed to unlock housing.

Mayors sought commitments to support responses to issues including the growing cost of waste management. They also discussed ongoing efforts to boost the health of the region’s natural environment and waterways with a record expansion of Resilient Rivers (SEQ), and work to attract long-term investment and jobs.

The latest growth data underpins findings of the Council of Mayors’ independent Benchmarking South East Queensland (SEQ) – in a global context report showing the region is expected to grow three times faster than global peers over the next 20 years.
