SEQ City Deal Innovation Economy Fund Announcement

The Council of Mayors (SEQ) welcomes today’s $200 million announcement through the SEQ City Deal’s Innovation Economy Fund. This funding unlocks $217 million worth of government and private sector investment across SEQ, including key projects in: 

  • $25 million awarded to AATLIS Innovation Precinct Industry Biotechnology Centre (IBC) in Toowoomba. 
  • $2.7 million for the LNP-mRNA Therapeutics to Clinical Trials project at Brisbane Technology Park, Eight Mile Plains.
  • $2.7  million upgrade for The University of Sunshine Coast Innovation Centre.
  • $3 million for an Australian-first biomedical scale-up & manufacturing facility at Boggo Road Innovation Precinct.
  • $6.8 million for the TM@TRI Supercharge Project at Boggo Road Innovation Precinct.
  • $7.6 million for Luggage Point Innovation Precinct in Brisbane.
  • $21.8 million for the Queensland Animal Science Innovation Precincts – University of Queensland at Lockyer Valley.

SEQ is a major economic gateway, home to world-class innovators, researchers and entrepreneurs. This funding will play a vital role in driving a thriving innovation ecosystem for the city region, increasing global competitiveness and boosting SEQ’s productivity. SEQ City Deal is committed to establishing thriving, innovative communities with new economic development corridors across the region for trade and investment.

The recent independent Benchmarking South East Queensland’ report showed SEQ has made progress in building its innovation ecosystem. However, with the region listed 9 out of 10 for innovation economy, amongst peers there is more work to do. South East Queensland is expected to grow three times faster than regions analysed in the report over the next 20 years with the report highlighting a need to boost the region’s profile to attract investment and retain innovative talent.
