The Council of Mayors (SEQ) has welcomed today’s $2.1billion funding package for waste and recycling announced by Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon.
CoMSEQ Chair and Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the funding would help Councils build new resource recovery infrastructure and increase community recycling rates.
“CoMSEQ has been working closely with the Queensland Government to secure certainty for councils as well as the investment needed from the State to improve SEQ’s waste recovery and recycling rates.
“Last month we launched the SEQ Waste Management Plan which provides a blueprint for SEQ’s resource recovery over the next decade, outlining an evidence-based approach for strategic, regional investment,” he said.
“Today’s funding package confirms the State’s commitment to supporting this plan and delivering the infrastructure and behavioural change needed to divert waste from landfill and ensure SEQ is a clean and sustainable global destination ahead of the 2032 Games.
“Collaboration won us the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and this same collaboration is now paying dividends for the future health of our region.
“CoMSEQ thanks Minister Scanlon the Queensland Government for their ongoing support.”
CoMSEQ Waste Working Group Chair Mayor Greg Christensen said the collaboration would continue through the establishment of a joint Project Management Office with the State Government to drive delivery of the SEQ Waste Management Plan.
“The Project Management Office will guide planning and investment over the coming years, focussing on the infrastructure and behavioural change needed to divert waste from landfill and deliver local jobs,” Cr Christensen said.
