As the Council of Mayors (SEQ) welcomes its new Chair, Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, we also say a fond farewell to our past Chair and Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk.
Appointed Chair of the Council of Mayors (SEQ) in 2011, Graham Quirk has led the organisation with strength, inclusiveness and a bold vision for the future of South East Queensland (SEQ).
He has worked tirelessly alongside the region’s Mayors to advocate for better funding and policy outcomes for the businesses and communities of the region, and leaves behind a strong legacy and long list of achievements as Chair.
The former Lord Mayor steps down as Chair of the Council of Mayors (SEQ) after securing a commitment from the Commonwealth and State governments for a 20-year SEQ City Deal, delivering a region-shaping transport roadmap and kick starting SEQ’s investigations into a potential 2032 Olympic Games bid.
Toowoomba Mayor and Council of Mayors (SEQ) Deputy Chair, Cr Paul Antonio, said that Quirk’s greatest strength was bringing all ten member councils together for a common purpose.
Graham’s goal always has been to improve the liveability and increase opportunities for the residents of SEQ,” Mayor Antonio said.
“Any decisions, including the plans around the recent SEQ City Deal, have been made with a clear focus about the greater good for the entire SEQ population.”
Redland City Mayor and Council of Mayors (SEQ) Treasurer, Cr Karen Williams, added that Graham Quirk has been an outstanding leader of the SEQ Mayors.
“The characteristics politicians are traditionally known for are leadership and vision, and while Graham Quirk has these in spades, it is his humility and easy going nature that set him apart and have earned him the reputation as not only a good leader but a genuinely likeable person,” said Mayor Williams.
“He has blazed a trail that will benefit generations of South East Queenslanders and I for one remain inspired by his ability to bring a diverse room of Mayors together to deliver strong unified results for our region.”
Lord Mayor Schrinner transitions into the role of Chair of the Council of Mayors (SEQ) effective immediately, and brings new experience and perspective to the group. The Council of Mayors (SEQ) looks forward to the leadership of Cr Schrinner as it continues to advocate for the interests of SEQ.
