Driverless tech arrives in SEQ

Driverless vehicle are coming to South East Queensland (SEQ).
EasyMile bus starts trial in Ipswich

The Council of Mayors (SEQ) is bringing the future of transport to South East Queensland with the rollout of a series of driverless vehicle trials across the region, in partnership with autonomous vehicle supplier EasyMile and transport operator TransDev.

The trials are an outcome of the Council of Mayors (SEQ) recent international mission to Singapore to investigate advances in technology and transport delivery, and the possible applications for South East Queensland.

A delegation of seven Mayors and Councillors met with representatives of EasyMile during the Singapore visit, and experienced the EZ10 electric driverless shuttle firsthand as part of a tour of the world-renowned Gardens by the Bay.

Sunshine Coast Council became the first in South East Queensland to trial the EZ10 shuttle with a successful demonstration of the vehicle in Mooloolaba in December. Negotiations are now underway for trials in the coming weeks for Ipswich and Redland councils.

EasyMile’s Simon Pearce said the demonstrations highlighted the impressive capabilities and safety features of the EZ10, and the benefits self-driving technology could offer in connecting residents to traditional public transport and improving mobility for those who are unable to drive.

“The EZ10 fully autonomous shuttle has a capacity of 12 customers and has been designed to cover short pre-defined routes through embedded and localisation technologies. Using the latest sensory technology, the vehicle can safely respond to environmental changes like moving pedestrians, cyclists and other cars.

“Easy Mile is excited to partner with the Council of Mayors (SEQ) to showcase driverless technology in South East Queensland. Mooloolaba was a successful first stop for the region, but we look forward to giving other parts of South East Queensland a chance to experience this new technology for themselves.”
