Mayors and Councillors from seven South East Queensland (SEQ) councils will be ready to explore some of the world’s most advanced technology and seamless public transport systems when they head to Singapore next week on a Council of Mayors’ (SEQ) business mission.

In a first for the region, the Council of Mayors’ (SEQ) delegation will spend three days in Singapore learning more about the country’s smart technology and understanding how it finances, delivers and operates its world class infrastructure.

Council of Mayors (SEQ) Deputy Chair and Toowoomba Mayor Cr Paul Antonio said the Singapore mission would provide SEQ councils with much greater awareness and understanding of the opportunities for harnessing emerging technologies and their potential application for SEQ. “All of our councils are focused on doing more with less.

While in most places, the adoption of smart cities technologies is in its infancy, Singapore is an exemplar in demonstrating the benefits of using these technologies.

“Our mission will be looking specifically at what tools and data we need to manage our cities more efficiently. We will also be learning lessons in how we can help our industries, particularly the health and aged care industries in which Singapore has specialist smart management expertise.

“As SEQ embarks on a period of growth and transformation in the coming decades, we will also be looking to explore how Singapore delivers and manages its state-of-the-art infrastructure and how we can apply those findings in the future planning for our region.

Our delegation looks forward to building strong and enduring partnerships with government and business leaders during our time in the country, and strengthening the civic and business relationships between SEQ and Singapore, said Cr Antonio.

The Council of Mayors (SEQ) delegation will depart Brisbane on Sunday 2 July and return on Thursday 6 July. In addition to meeting with key government and business leaders, the delegation will be welcomed to Singapore with a reception at the Australian High Commission.

Participating councils include Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay, Redland, Scenic Rim and Toowoomba. More information on trade and investment in SEQ is available at seqinvest.com.au.
