The Mayors of South East Queensland (SEQ) have mourned the passing of dual Olympian and former Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke.
Mr Clarke, 78, passed away in the early hours of this morning at the Allamanda Hospital in Southport.
Council of Mayors (SEQ) Chair Cr Graham Quirk acknowledged Ron Clarke’s impressive Olympic career and also his contribution to local government in Queensland.
“With an amazing Olympic career already accomplished, Mr Clarke then took on the challenge of leading the City of Gold Coast and making his community a better place. There is no denying the positive impact Ron has had on shaping the future of the Gold Coast and SEQ,” said Cr Quirk.
“Ron Clarke will be remembered as a champion of both sport and politics.”
Mr Clarke served two successful terms as the Mayor of the City of Gold Coast and was a Director of the Council of Mayors (SEQ) from its inception until 2012.
