The Council of Mayors (SEQ) today met with IOC President Thomas Bach in Sydney to express the region’s interest in a potential bid for the 2028 Olympic Games.
The group was represented by the Council of Mayors (SEQ) Chair and Brisbane Lord Mayor Cr Graham Quirk (by videoconference), Sunshine Coast Mayor Cr Mark Jamieson and Executive Director Mr Peter Olah.
The meeting represented an information gathering and protocol exercise for the Council of Mayors (SEQ) with no formal outcomes or decisions anticipated. However, the Council of Mayors (SEQ) welcomed the opportunity to meet Mr Bach and learn more about the IOC’s new economical bidding process.
The next step for the Council of Mayors (SEQ) will be undertaking detailed feasibility studies to establish if South East Queensland will be a suitable Olympics host.
A formal expression of interest for the 2028 Olympics is not required until January 2019, with a formal bid deadline later that year. No funding has been allocated towards the bid, nor is it required at this stage.
