City of Gold Coast

goldcoast.qld.gov.au

Stretching along 57 kilometres of stunning coastline, the Gold Coast is best known for its surf, sand and sunshine, bordered by its lush hinterland. Its natural beauty, relaxed lifestyle and ideal location make the Gold Coast one of the most unique cities in which to live and work.

While the Gold Coast remains a favourite tourism destination, attracting 12 million visitors each year, the city’s economy is diversifying. Industries with a strong foothold now include education, sports, film, the arts, health, food production, IT, marine and advanced manufacturing.

The City of Gold Coast is aiming to make a mark on the world stage, where knowledge, innovation and commercialisation are the key drivers for growth.

Gold Coast is a city of opportunity, on the cusp of a transformational change thanks to the 2018 Commonwealth Games, which has instilled a new sense of city pride in all of us. There’s no other place in the world like the Gold Coast.

Mayor Tom Tate

Mayor Tom Tate

Council of Mayors (SEQ) Director

Tom Tate was elected Mayor of the Gold Coast, Australia’s 6th largest city, in April 2012.

Mayor Tate is a civil engineer by trade, having graduated from the University of NSW in the early 80s. He started his career in the construction industry and later moved into the tourism and hospitality industry.

With a strong business background, Mayor Tate has spent his time in office ensuring everyone knows that the Gold Coast is ‘open for business’. This has seen certainty return to the city, which in turn has boosted confidence and created significant investment across the Gold Coast.

With the Gold Coast now the next host city for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Mayor Tate is also leading a city that is embracing change and dreaming big. Mayor Tate believes major projects currently in the pipeline will help transform the Gold Coast from a city with potential to a truly world class global centre. These major projects include: the Gold Coast
Cultural Precinct; Gold Coast Chinatown and the creation of Southport as the city’s true Central Business District (CBD).

Mayor Tate is working to return that ‘have a go’ spirit back to the Gold Coast. He has committed to reducing the cost of living pressure facing residents, reform council, cut waste and broaden the Gold Coast’s economic base beyond its cornerstones of tourism and construction.

Mayor Tate has been married to his wife, Ruth for 36 years and together they have 4 children. The multicultural Mayor was born in Asia and is fluent in three languages.
